The South Ukraine Power Complex consists of: SE «South Ukraine Nuclear Power Plant» Olexandrivka Hydro Power Plant on the South (Pivdenny) Buh River Tashlyk Hydro Pumped Storage Power Plant South Ukraine Power Complex with its production volume satisfies demand in electricity and caters for the well-being of the Southern part of Ukraine populated by more than 5 million people. For twenty five years the enterprise generated almost 400 billion kWh(e). South Ukraine NPP SU NPP is the basis of the power complex. It comprises three VVER-1000 power units built in two industrial stages. Its history dates back to December 1982 when its first unit was commissioned. In May, 2007 SUNPP celebrated its 25th anniversary. Units 2 and 3, 1000 MW each, were commissioned in 1985 and 1989, respectively. Annual contribution of the South Ukraine Nuclear Power Plant to the total electricity production in the country exceeds 10%. It is at this nuclear power plant where the project on nuclear fuel supply diversification is being implemented: in 2005 it is the first time six fuel assemblies manufactured by Westinghouse , U.S. Company (FA-W) have been loaded along with Russian fuel assemblies into the reactor core of South-Ukraine Unit 3. In 2010 the next reload batch of U.S. nuclear fuel consisting of 42 FA-W will start operating at the SUNPP Unit 3. In 2009 South Ukraine NPP hosted seven missions of the International Atomic Energy Agency. After having evaluated the operation and design safety of three VVER-1000 MW units, reviewed the radioactive management process and the power unit decommissioning program, the IAEA experts found them compliant with all international requirements. Tashlyk Hydro Pumped Storage Power Plant (THPSPP) Construction of Tashlyk HPSPP started in 1981. Hydraulic unit #1 was put into operation in the end of 2006. Hydraulic unit #2 was commissioned in July 2007. THPSPP is intended for covering peak loads in the South-Western region of Ukrainian power system and securing safe base load operation of SUNPP. For more than 20 years of construction history, Tashlyk HPSPP project undergone significant modifications. Current revision of this project came through all expert reviews envisaged by the Ukrainian legislation. Based on the conclusions of these expert reviews the project was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine. The project is implemented in line with all requirements of environmental legislation. Olexandrivska Hydro Power Plant (OHPP) OHPP composed of two hydro power units with 11.5 MW of total capacity was put in commercial operation in 1999. Annually, power units of OHPP generate more than 35 million kWh(e). The Olexandrivska water reservoir is located in the South Buh river canyon and makes a part of the hydrotechnical facilities of the South Ukraine power complex, ensures electricity production at hydropower plant and serves as a lower water pond for Tashlyk HPSPP. Olexandrivska hydro system is important for protection of the residential settlements located downstream the South Buh from spring floods.
